Drop off old Cell Phones at select Charleston County Parks to Help U.S. Soldiers Call Home

Starting June 9 and continuing through the end of August, several of your Charleston County Parks will be serving as drop-off locations for used mobile phone recycling. Through the Cell Phones for Soldiers program, these donated phones will be exchanged for calling cards to be used by those serving overseas in the United States military.

Locations that will be accepting used cell phones will include James Island County Park, Palmetto Islands County Park, Wannamaker County Park, and the Mount Pleasant Pier. Park-goers are encouraged to bring no-longer-needed cell phones with them for recycling in designated containers on site. Used and non-working mobile phones from all service providers are accepted. Each $5 contribution, or donated device valued at $5, will provide troops with 2.5 hours of free talk time.

Since its inception in 2004, Cell Phones for Soldiers has worked to keep military families connected by providing free communication tools to those serving overseas in the United States military. This non-profit organization has provided troops with more than 2.5 million prepaid calling cards, equating to 181 million minutes of free talk time. The organization has prevented more than 10.8 million cell phones from ending up in landfills.

The family-run Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by Robbie and Brittany Bergquist of Norwell, Mass., at the ages of 12 and 13. For more information on Cell Phones for Soldiers, visit www.CellPhonesforSoldiers.com.
