Enjoy a scavenger hunt downtown, find as many Book On Downtown posters as possible and write the name of the scientist or inventor pictured at each location. Turn in your scorecard to any branch location by July 1 for a chance to win $100 and other great prizes. Welcome to South Carolina by Mary Jane Nichols

Nichols’ paintings aim to capture the beauty and solitude of the great American landscape, and they represent some of the fondest memories of her youth. Nichols is a S.C. native, and her hometown of Rock Hill is featured prominently, along with surrounding counties and views from her trips to the beach.

Gershwin gathered much of the musical inspiration for his opera Porgy and Bess during three trips to the Charleston area in 1933-1934. In 1862, enslaved Charleston pilot Robert Smalls commandeered the steamship Planter through Confederate lines and delivered valuable intelligence to the Union Navy blockading our harbor. This act won enduring fame for Smalls, but the fate of the Planter is largely forgotten. Please join CCPL's historian, Dr. Nic Butler, for a brief tour of the renowned vessel's history from its launch in the summer of 1860 to its stormy end in the spring of 1876.

Driven by passion for bringing history alive by exploring the tragedy of Meriwether Lewis (of Lewis and Clark fame) and his death along the Natchez Trace, To Live Forever: An Afterlife Journey of Meriwether Lewis is historical fiction with a paranormal twist, weaving together the story of Lewis’ past with a modern tale of redemption and hope.
