Strong Families Launches Nationwide "Mamas Day" Campaign
5/7/2014 11:47:29 PM

WASHINGTON, DC - As part of its effort to improve the day-to-day conditions facing mothers and families, and expand our idea of what a mama is, Forward Together is launching its Strong Families Mamas Day campaign. Mamas Day asks people to share their unique stories through social media channels and diverse collection of e-cards. Whether you are a mama or you're honoring your own mama, your story is likely different from the idealized version most often portrayed.

"Motherhood has many faces in this country," said Eveline Shen, Executive Director of Forward Together, which leads the Strong Families movement. "Our Mamas Day campaign is about shining the light on the millions of Mamas out there who are invisible or unrecognized and honoring the contributions that they make to their families and their communities."

For the fourth year, the Mamas Day campaign will give individuals the opportunity to send Mamas Day cards that connect more directly to their own experience than a card found at the local drug store. "By seeing families as they really are we can work towards replacing dated public policies with ones that help mothers and their families thrive," says Shen.

"Every mother should be celebrated, but our Mamas need more than a box of chocolates or a dozen roses on a designated day," said Shen. "Mamas Day is about lifting up what Mamas need the other 364 days a year."

Forward Together and Strong Families invite people nationwide to participate in this year's Mamas Day Campaign from May 5-11. Over the years, Forward Together has worked with more than 20 artists to create original, customizable e-cards to celebrate loved ones. Last year, thousands of people customized and shared e-cards depicting the diversity of mamas across the United States. In addition to the collection of e-cards, 40 diverse voices contributed their individual stories and experiences of "mamahood" as a part of this year's Mamas Day blog series.

With over 125 national Strong Families partners, Forward Together continues to celebrate Mamas Day with a broader, more inclusive lens through these e-cards and shared stories. All materials are available at Members of the media and the general public can follow this year's campaign via social media with the #MamasDay hashtag as well as on the Strong Families Facebook page and on Twitter at @StrongFams.
