Prior to two years ago, the Murray Hill community did not offer athletic progams for youth that live in the area. More recent neighborhood and recreational events either had to forego rest- room facilities or have portable toilets brought in to meet the needs of the attendees, limiting participation from the commu- nity. The improvements at Murray Hill Community Center will help to change its circumstances. The completion of the project was celebrated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 17.

“This is something that we have been working on for many years. We had a few obstacles to deal with, but we kept pressing on to get the job done,”" said Murray Hill Neighborhood Association President Tommy Chisolm.

"We felt we needed this for our community. We needed the kind of faculty where people would feel comfortable and want to continue to come out to support the kids. Two years ago, we couldn’t get any kids to come out. Volunteers have been knocking on doors in the neigh- borhoods to get our kids involved in the program, and we now have over 100 kids in our baseball program,” said Chisolm.

Today, the City’s Recreation Department has 135 participants in its Murray Hill youth base- ball and softball programs and approximately 90 participants in its youth football program. The improvements to the facili- ty are assisting in meeting the needs of the growing involve- ment from the community that should continue that growth trend.

Chisolm showed his gratitude for everyone that helped com- plete the project, noting that volunteers and the North Charleston Recreation Department were instrumental in the process.
