Charleston Marathon continues to support fine arts for area youth
4/23/2014 10:44:50 AM

Join North Charleston Mayor R. Keith Summey, as the proceeds from the 4th Annual Charleston Marathon are presented to the Youth Endowment for the Arts (YEA), benefiting Charleston County School fine arts programming.

Where: Quarters K on Riverfront Park, 1045 Everglades Ave, North Charleston, SC 29405

When: Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 5:30pm

The donation to the YEA funds grants to Charleston County schools for arts projects that increase academic achievement in students through the development of artistic skill and participation in the arts. The Charleston Marathon has raised over $180,000 since 2011, not including this year’s proceeds which will be revealed at the reception.

“We are thrilled with the success of the 4th Annual Charleston Marathon presented by Harris Teeter,” said Charleston Marathon Executive Director, Liz Alford. “Each year with the growth of the race, our contributions to YEA increase, as well as the opportunities that this event generates for Charleston County students.”

Mayor Summey said, “Each year this generous donation from the Charleston Marathon enables more and more of the youth of our community to reap the benefits of expanded cultural experiences and participate in an event that encourages them to choose an active and healthy lifestyle.”

“Over the past three years, Harris Teeter has proudly supported the Charleston Marathon as the Presenting Sponsor,” said Danna Jones, communication specialist for Harris Teeter. “For Harris Teeter, being a part of the Charleston Marathon is meaningful as the commitment is two-fold; we have the opportunity to reinforce our commitment to Charleston County Schools, while at the same time encouraging healthy activity and exercise for the entire Charleston community.”

Planning for the 5th Annual Charleston Marathon is underway and will take place January 16-19, 2015:

Charleston Marathon events begin on Friday, January 16, 2015 at Burke Middle & High School and include a health and fitness expo, pre-race dinner, and the Charleston Youth Marathon. The expo will feature student fine arts works and the pre-race dinner will feature student performance groups. The Charleston Youth Marathon was also developed to promote student involvement and create a link between health and the arts. This modified marathon encourages students to run or walk 25 miles on their own, logging their progress the months before the race, and running the final 1.2 miles at the Charleston Youth Marathon.
On Saturday, January 17, 2015 the 5K will start in North Charleston at the North Charleston High School, while the half marathon and full marathon will begin at Burke Middle & High School and traverse the cities of Charleston and North Charleston, and finish at North Charleston High School. The routes will also contain venues along the route featuring student fine art performance groups. All races share a common finish line. There will be a post-race festival that will include vendors, live musical entertainment, food and drinks and student performances.

The Charleston Marathon events conclude on Sunday, January 20, 2013 with a 20, 40 and 60 mile bike ride that starts and finishes in downtown Charleston.
