Living healthy and being happy often go hand in hand. However, it is often seen as a daunting task for a person to reach and maintain a healthy lifestyle. “Lifestyle” is the operative word, says entrepreneur Akilah C. Thompson.

“Not a diet but a lifestyle change”, Thompson sells as the major point people need to understand in order to start a rewarding trek to a better body and mind. Thompson, a self-made woman from Brooklyn whose many crafts include model, singer, speaker, actor, author, and fitness instructor, strives to provide the tools for success to those willing to listen.

A Summa Cum Laude graduate of North Carolina A&T, Thompson has used her degrees in Accounting and Business Economics to found ACT Inspires, a company built on her credo of inspiring others and promoting ambition.

Thompson has experience with weight struggles in her life but has overcome them with determination. She acknowledges that it is “not easy” to begin a wholesale change in lifestyles, but certain sacrifices will have to made, both minor and major.

An important shift in behavior suggested by Thompson proposes managing your time wisely. “You make time for what you want”, she believes. This includes getting sufficient amounts of sleep and waking up early to be more productive during the day. “Respect your own time as much as others’”, she adds.

Her tips for eating healthy incorporates buying in bulk, choosing frozen over fresh produce, bringing lunch to work, cutting sugar, baking or broiling instead of frying, and placing portion control on each meal.

All of her food tips have a budget in mind to keep costs down. Thompson asserts that there is “no excuse for not affording healthy food”. Either you pay for better for your body at the store or pay a doctor to fix the harm unhealthy food does to you.

As a certified Zumba instructor, Thompson has sensible advice for workout novices. “Find what motives you”, she voices as a foundation for people to build on from the start. The process may seem grueling but she pushes for baby steps to be taken at first. It should all lead to a daily routine that advances an active lifestyle but can only be done but staying consistent and dedicated, she says.

Working hard in school, the office, and the gym has paid off tremendously for Thompson. Her accomplishments are highlighted in the fact that she shunned Corporate America and triumphed in her ventures ever since. Once a troubled teen, she is now “happy with everything” and “living life with a purpose”.
