Coming together for the second time, Lowcountry Voices and St. James Presbyterian gear up for their 2nd Annual Music Seminar and Concert featuring Dr. James Abbington, noted music clinician and choral director.
The music seminar will include a weekend of workshops, and rehearsals, and a culminating concert which will feature the Workshop Mass Choir and the host choir Lowcountry Voices under the direction of Nathan L. Nelson, Music Director.
The church music seminar and workshop will feature Dr. Abbington’s unique approach in teaching and highlighting the historical background of the music selections as well as the proper vocal techniques in singing all genres of sacred music most especially music of the African American Heritage.
Workshops will be held on Thursday, March 6th and Friday, March 7th from 5:30-8:30PM at the St. James Presbyterian Church, 1314 Secessionville Rd, on James Island. The first half of the workshop will deal with musicianship and vocal techniques for choirs. Dr. Abbington will then turn his attention to preparing participants to be showcased in a concert on Saturday March 8th at 5:30PM.
In addition to hearing the Workshop Mass Choir in this jubilant closing concert, the Lowcountry Voices will present several soul stirring selections which have become a trademark of this N. Charleston–based choir. Also on board this year will be Nathaniel Gumbs, Minister of Music at Friendship Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC as Guest Accompanist for the program. The Workshop Fee is $30. $20 for the Music Packet. Tickets for the Saturday Closing Concert are only $10 and also available for purchase.
James Abbington is an associate professor of church music and worship at Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. He is also adjunct professor of church music at Morehouse College in Atlanta. He received a B.A. in music from Morehouse College in Atlanta, an M. Mus. and D.M.A. in church music and organ from The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Dr. Abbington is an associate editor of the African American Heritage Hymnal (GIA Publications, 2001) and is the executive editor of GIA Publications’ African American Church Music Series and leader of the “Sing to the Rafters. He is also an associate editor for most recently released Total Praise: Songs and Other Worship Resources for Every Generation co-published by the Sunday School Publishing Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA and GIA Publications.
Lowcountry Voices is a multicultural and ethnically diverse choir which performs standard choral repertoire with special emphasis on African- American musical traditions.
