The Spoleto Festival USA annual auction heralds the 38th Festival with a tapas-style dinner, dancing, and a chance to support the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra through lively bidding on a long list of exciting items. This year’s auction event features a live performance by the Charleston Latin-Jazz Collective and Gino Castillo, one of the most respected percussionists in the Cuban jazz tradition. Making their Spoleto Festival USA debut, this ensemble will take center stage on January 31 at Charleston’s Memminger Auditorium for a salsa-style evening as guests bid on a range of one-of-a-kind auction items. All proceeds benefit the Festival’s matchless orchestra in residence.

Event tickets are available online at spoletousa.org or by calling 843.720.1114. Tickets are $150 per person or $1,500 for VIP reserved seating for six. In addition, an online auction will run from January 27 at 9:00am to February 9 at 9:00pm at spoletoauction.com.

Expressive and soulful, the Charleston Latin-Jazz Collective has won praise for their fresh melding of traditional Cuban dance music and contemporary Latin Jazz. Charleston’s premier Latin dance band, this 7-man ensemble includes trumpet player Charlton Singleton, who has performed all over the world and directs the 20-piece Charleston Jazz Orchestra; and percussionist Gino Castillo, whose expertise has taken him from Ecuador to New York to Charleston, and who will be featured during this event. With powerful talent and vivacious spirit, the Charleston Latin-Jazz Collective will provide an unforgettable musical experience.

This year, the Spoleto auction evening commences at 7:00pm with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. During this time, guests will be able to use one of several laptops located throughout the room to participate in the associated online auction. The Charleston Latin-Jazz Collective will then perform the first of two musical sets as guests enjoy seated tapas. Following the performance, guests will have the chance to bid on live auction items, including a 13-day tour of Tuscany and Umbria; a luxurious suite for 12 guests for a 2014 Carolina Panthers home game; design-your-own piece of jewelry from Croghan’s Jewel Box; a private concert in which you select the repertoire for internationally renowned pianist Inon Barnatan at Spoleto’s historic Middleton Pinckney Mansion with refreshments; a private sound check with Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn; dinner for 12 by celebrated chef Mike Lata; and “Have Party, Will Travel”—a package that includes everything you need to host a party for 40. Guests may also bid to sponsor individual members of the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra for their residency during the 2014 season. Following the live auction, guests can dance the night away on the first-ever auction dance floor.

Every year since its inception, the Festival’s auction has supported the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra, a diverse group of accomplished young musicians who compete nationally in rigorous auditions to secure a spot in the renowned ensemble. Providing the musical backbone of the Festival, the orchestra is central to the excellence of performance that Festival audiences experience year after year.

The 38th season of Spoleto Festival USA takes place May 23 to June 8, 2014, in Charleston, SC, and tickets are now on sale. For more information, please visit spoletousa.org or call 843.579.3100.
