Tucked away in a secluded neighborhood across from Boeing in North Charleston is a construction project that at first glance appears to be pretty much the same as any other in its industry. But with closer examination it’s quickly discovered that this project is quite different from others. The project by Titan Atlas Global (TAG) is taking home and commercial building to a whole new level, according to the company CEO, Jeremy Blackburn. In addition to building quality structures, this company is also building and re-building lives of Low Country residents through second chance employment opportunities.

According to Blackburn, TAG uses unique patented materials in their building process. “The Best of the Worlds Construction Products made in the USA” is a company tagline. Most construction companies use concrete as their building foundation and lumber or metal for the rest of the project, but TAG has developed specialized processes coupled with patented construction materials and technologies that allows for formless insulated steel reinforced concrete to be used for the entire structure.

“That’s right, floor, walls, ceiling, and roof, all made of insulated steel reinforced concrete. “These homes are wind rated to 300+ miles per hour, energy efficient, earthquake and fire compliant to the very stringent International Building Code. Insurance savings and unmatched energy efficiency and maintenance savings will make these homes very affordable year after year, which is even more important than the initial purchase price which is equal or less than traditional wood built homes”, Blackburn said.

TAG commenced operations in September 2013 and after a startup and training period of a couple months, will complete its first home this week with seven more in various stages of construction and a plan to start two new homes a week by March.

In addition to home building, TAG has also partnered with Tri-County Associates, a local consulting firm, to assist with identifying local residents who are seeking employment and want to be a part of this cutting edge building technology.

“We want to help the community grow,” Blackburn said, “and we can do that by hiring and training locally.” Many of the people hired by TAG are ex-offenders who have had difficulty finding a company that would be willing to give them a second chance. “We understand that people sometimes make mistakes,” Blackburn said, “we all make mistakes, so if we can help someone who is trying to get their life in order then we will do that.”

So far to date, TAG has hired 43 full time employees, many of which are considered second chance hires. The employees are provided work tools and clothes, paid holidays and even vacation time after an initial probation period.

The hands on training that TAG provides these workers is giving them employment skills that will help to ensure them lifelong success. “We already have contracts for projects across the US and are finalizing contracts in five international countries to commence this year.

We want to give our current employees the chance to travel and teach these construction skills to others. In addition to TAG changing lives through employment, Blackburn says that TAG will also assist employees in achieving home ownership if that’s their dream. “We will structure a plan to make purchasing a home, which they will help build, a reality for our employees, regardless of their credit.”

TAG not only builds the homes but also manufactures the materials for the homes right here in North Charleston.

The company headquarters in the Stark Industrial Park manufactures and fabricates everything from steel supports, structural panels, to concrete countertops, flooring and wall materials.

The mission of Titan Atlas Global, according to Blackburn, is “To manufacture and supply the planet’s strongest and most cost efficient homes and buildings.” To that end, he says that TAG is not only building Low-Country homes but also changing Low-country lives in a good way.
