Workshop: How to Photograph Your Artwork

Whether it’s for promotional print material, a website, or an application for a competition or exhibition, every artist needs good digital photographs of their artwork. Local professional photographer, Donna Hurt, will instruct artists on the basics for photographing artwork in this free 2.5 hour workshop. The workshop will focus mainly on how to photograph 3D works, but will offer tips on how to take images of 2D works as well.  Some key points that will be covered include lighting, white balance, composition, depth of field, basic camera settings, and lens use.  Participants must bring a digital camera, and, if available, the camera’s manual.  Artwork will be staged for participants to experiment with taking images. Following the workshop, 20 minute long one-on-one sessions will be offered for artists to gain more personalized instruction from Donna. While the workshop is free, one-on-one sessions are $35.  Note that having artwork photographed by a professional can often cost $50.00 or more per piece, so this is a great opportunity to get some strong images of your work at a low cost.  Remember that getting a good photo of your artwork can mean the difference between selling a piece and not selling a piece, or getting into a show or not getting into a show. Collectors, curators, and jurors often only have the photo of an artwork in front of them, so it needs to accurately represent the work.

Olde Village Community Building, 4820 Jenkins Avenue, North Charleston

Fee: Free workshop (RSVP required); One-on-one sessions are $35 (20 minutes each, by appointment). Call 843-740-5854.

The challenge for this year’s exhibition is to show the world your JOY! through an art quilt.
