COLUMBIA, S.C. - Eight schools have been recognized as Champions of the Environment for the 2013-2014 school year, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.

"We're pleased to be able to give out eight major grant awards this year," said Amanda Ley, DHEC's coordinator for the Champions of the Environment program. "We were also able to provide smaller starter awards to four other schools just beginning their projects.

"This year's grant award projects are really innovative and spread widely across the state," she said. "Topics range from alternative energy and sustainable gardening to restoring natural areas."

This year's Champions of the Environment grant winners include:
Pickens County Career and Technology Center, Pickens County
Strom Thurmond Career and Technology Center, Edgefield County
Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Richland County
Adam Enggasser with Greenville Senior High Academy, Greenville County
Jane Edwards Elementary, Charleston County
West Ashley High School, Charleston County
The Center for Advanced Technical Studies, Lexington/Richland Counties
Sandlapper Elementary School, Richland County.

In addition to the grant awards, a commercial will be made about each of the projects and the commercials will be featured on WIS-TV in Columbia, the Champions' website and YouTube.

Champions of the Environment supports environmental action in South Carolina's kindergarten through 12th-grade students through its grant award program. Champions is sponsored by International Paper, SCE&G, WIS-TV and WCSC-TV with assistance from the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina.
