Charleston Chapter of The Links, Inc. Adds Four New Members

The Charleston (SC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, founded in 1951, has four new members who began their volunteer service with the organization this fall.

Thuane Brockington Fielding, base closure manager for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Asset Management’s Base Realignment and Closure Program Management Office East for the Department of Defense (DOD); Dawna B. Gardner, Esq., trademark examining attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in Alexandria, VA, but based in Charleston; Dr. Nona Nurse Gilliard, a dentist with Gentle Dental Care in Moncks Corner, and Mary T. Joseph, owner of Mary Joseph State Farm Insurance Agency joined as the newest members of the Charleston Links’ chapter.

Thuane Brockington Fielding, a native of Charleston, SC, is the organist at Morris Street Baptist Church. In addition, she is a Sunday school teacher, director of the A.R. Blake Choir and secretary of the marriage ministry. Fielding graduated from Charles A. Brown High School in 1981 (Charleston, SC) and earned the Bachelor of Science degree in ceramic engineering with a minor in industrial engineering from Clemson in 1986.

Fielding’s community service includes the following: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. where she is a member of Gamma Xi Omega Chapter (Charleston, SC); River Oaks Home for Girls’ Board of Directors; Twenty Pearls Foundation of Charleston, Inc. Fielding, a former member of the Charleston County School District’s Constituent #20 Board, has volunteered with Burke High School’s Band Booster Club, the Charleston County School District’s Policy Committee, the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center and the Franke Home while a member of The Junior League of Charleston, Inc.

Dawna B. Gardner, Esq. relocated to Charleston from Arlington, VA.  She has been an attorney with USPTO for sixteen years. During her career, Gardner has researched and examined trademark applications for a variety of goods and services and prepared written documents and appellate briefs regarding substantive trademark issues. In addition to mentoring and training new trademark examining attorneys, Gardner was also the coordinating founder and two-term president of the USPTO Legal Society, and an adjunct legal writing instructor at the American University, Washington College of Law where she led instruction to a class of first-year law students. 
 
While living in Arlington, VA, Gardner served on an advisory panel for the Arts Industries Policy Forum for the CURB Center at Vanderbilt University.
 
Gardner is a 1991 graduate of Spelman College and a 1995 graduate of Villanova University School of Law. After law school, Gardner was a staff attorney and shelter counselor for the Howard County Domestic Violence Center in Columbia, MD. Following two judicial clerkships on the district and circuit courts in Howard and Anne Arundel counties in Maryland, she pursued a career in intellectual property and became an examining attorney with the USPTO.
 
While living in Virginia, Gardner was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday school and served on the courtesy committee.

Dr. Nona Nurse Gilliard has been in private practice with Gentle Dental Care since 2003. Gilliard graduated from Irvington High School in 1987; Rutgers University - Douglass College (NJ) in 1999 with a bachelor of arts in psychology with an emphasis in pre-med and received the doctorate of dental medicine degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) in 1997.

Gilliard's community service includes the following: providing oral health screenings and educational seminars for Berkeley County HeadStart Program, Berkeley Intermediate School, Cross Elementary School, Moncks Corner AME Church, Heart to Heart Ministries, Lovely Hill Baptist Church, and Day Dawn Baptist Church (2003-present);  Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Florence and Charleston, SC Chapters (2006-present); supporter of the American Heart Association, March of Dimes, and the Relay for Life. She has also been a volunteer certified emergency medical technician at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ (1996-1997).

Dr. Gilliard's memberships with professional organizations include: lifetime member of the NAACP; National Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, (2006-2009).

Mary T. Joseph, owner of Mary Joseph State Farm Insurance Agency, moved to Charleston SC in January 1997 as the first African-American female State Farm Agent in the trident region. Joseph has been affiliated with State Farm Insurance Companies for over 30 years and leads a team of five (5) professionals with over 65 years of combined experience.

Joseph is a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, a Charter Life Underwriter, Select Legion of Honor Agent and 16-time Ambassador Travel Agent. She is currently a member and past board member of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. She is a graduate of the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Joseph's community service includes the following: member of the Charleston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (with 25 years of service in 2012). Joseph was selected as Delta of the Year by the Charleston Alumnae Chapter in 2013.

She is a member of the Church of Christ and leads the ladies’ Bible study class. She serves as a winter mission worker on the South Africa and Asia mission team and for the past 13 years has made missionary trips to over 10 countries.
