Charleston, SC – On October 26, 2013, community groups, elected officials and supporters gathered to enjoy the Blue Jamboree program hosted by the West Ashley Democrats. Speakers included Congressmen James Clyburn and Elijah Cummings. State and local officials include Vincent Sheheen, Bakari Sellers, Clementa Pinckney, Marlon Kimpson, Collen Condon and many other officials and supporters.
During the event, held on the grounds at the Jenkins Institute, Mrs. Johanna Martin-Carrington, Executive Director presented a self-portrait to Mrs. Whipper in appreciation for her countless years of service to the Institute and to Avery Research Center.
Montez Martin, Chair and members of the Awards Selection Committee presented the Marjorie Amos-Frazier Pacesetter Award to Mrs. Lucille S. Whipper, presented annually to an individual based on their community involvement.
Mrs. Whipper is a former Academic Administrator, member of the S.C. House of Representatives, Vice Chairman of the Democratic Party Convention, Charleston District Twenty School Board, member of the State Human Affairs Commission and former President of Gamma Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Mrs. Whipper’s name will be added to the Marjorie Amos-Frazier perpetual award which adorns a wall in the Chambers of City Hall.
