Synetra Grant

When Synetra Grant was a child, she would always bring home stray animals. Her grandmother would complain about the pets but Synetra couldn't help herself; she loved animals. Though she has always wanted to become a veterinarian there were plenty of moments in her life where she thought that her career goals wouldn't come true. As a young single mother and a recent GED graduate, Synetra enrolled in Palmetto Youth Connections to develop employability skills that would help her find a job. She was thrilled when her lifelong dream of working with animals was coming true with the help of Palmetto Youth Connections.

Synetra heard about the Palmetto Youth Connections when she moved to rural St. Stephen's from Orangeburg. She had just gotten her GED and was ready for a change. She participated in the 3 day employability workshop called Career Smart, followed by a week-long customer service training program developed by the National Retail Federation. Synetra says that learning about interview etiquette was the most valuable part of these trainings.

"I needed a job so bad and I had a real problem with my nerves during interviews," said Synetra. "We learned to prepare for interviews in advance and practiced interviewing together. Later, when I interviewed with my current employer, I felt confident and prepared because I knew what to expect," she explained.

After completing her employment and customer service training, Synetra started in a Work Experience opportunity at the Doc Williams SPCA Spay and Neuter Clinic. She helped prepare animals for surgery and assisted with their recovery. The business was so happy with Synetra's work ethic during her Work Experience they offered her employment as the clinic's receptionist. She accepted the job and is working full time.

"I want to emphasize that the staff and Palmetto Youth Connections is incredible," said Synetra. "They really cared about my goals and interests and supported me every step of the way. I'm now in a place where I can provide for myself and my daughter and I couldn't be happier."

Synetra continues to work towards her career goals and is currently a student in the Vet Tech program at Trident Technical College. "Don't give up on your dreams," she said. "Stick with it! If you have a passion for something, figure out how you can make that passion your career. Palmetto Youth Connections helped me do that. They can help you too!"
