The Charleston, SC Chapter of Continental Societies, Inc. received numerous honors and awards at the annual conference held in June, 2013.

Continental Chapters throughout the United States and Bermuda address the needs of children and youth in their communities via a national programmatic thrust...HEER + Arts and Humanities Programs (Health, Education, Employment, and Recreation + Arts and Humanities).

The organization’s presence has been seen at several area elementary schools and community organizations that cater to the development of building strong youth mentoring programs, youth health programs, asthma awareness camps, day and overnight summer camps, and a host of other programs.

Charleston Continentals received the national 1st place award in Health related programs.

During the 2012-2013 activity year, the organization’s Health and Recreation committees partnered with Apple Charter School to organize a fun-filled event that included a 5K run/walk and health fair.

The 5K Run/Walk coupled with a Health Fair was held on May 11, 2013 and helped students to connect the importance of physical activity with preventing overweight and obesity.

The goal was also to educate students and their families about Juvenile Diabetes and to stress the significance of good oral hygiene.

The event provided information about local health services by connecting students and their parents with health related resources in our community.

The Colgate Dental Van conducted oral screenings; and local health programs such as New York Life, Virginia College Nursing Department, Medical University of South Carolina and Roper St. Francis Health Network participated in the event and provided a wealth of resources that included health screenings, literature and information that addressed many health conditions.

Living healthy lives throughout the lifespan was stressed.

Additionally, Charleston Continentals were recognized with a $250.00 award from the Continental Societies’ corporate partner, Colgate Palmolive, for increasing their local membership by 38%.

The chapter added five new members to the 13 members already on the roster. They are scheduled to induct three additional members in September, 2013.

The Charleston Chapter awarded academic scholarships to two local students.

Asia Johnson was awarded a $700.00 scholarship locally, and a $1000 scholarship from the Mid-Atlantic Region, for submitting a 1st place scholarship application.

Asia graduated from Summerville High School with a 3.76 GPA and will attend Clemson University in the fall, 2013.

Charles Gordon received the Mid-Atlantic Regional Scholarship for submitting the 1st place technical school application.

He graduated from Baptist Hill High School and will attend Trident Technical College in the fall, 2013.

Finally, the local chapter of Continental Societies, Inc. received 100 book bags from the national corporate partner, Colgate-Palmolive, which were filled with school supplies and distributed to local school children.

The organization partnered with HALOS (Helping and Lending Outreach Support) to fill the backpacks with school supplies and distribute the backpacks to local children in need.
