Introducing iSUP Fitness at James Island County Park
8/30/2013 1:00:30 PM

CHARLESTON, SC - A new trend in fitness on the water is making its debut at James Island County Park. Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Fitness pairs SUP with elements of more traditional fitness classes.

Beginning Sept. 9, iSUP is the first in a series of SUP Fitness programs to be hosted by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission at James Island County Park. iSUP (i stands for "interval") uses intervals of Barre, Pilates and yoga to build core stability, develop upper body strength, and lift and tone the lower body.

"The functional, multi-tasking nature of SUP Fitness makes it an ideal workout for anyone looking to burn more calories in a shorter period of time," says CCPRC's Fitness and Wellness Program Manager Allison Foster.

The fall iSUP course is offered Sept. 9 through Oct. 18 at James Island County Park and is led by veteran SUP Fitness instructor Mary Ann Stisher. Participants will meet at the park's boat launch.

All fitness levels are welcome and encouraged to attend regardless of experience with SUP. A basic SUP skills overview will be held at the beginning of each class.

"The lake setting makes this the perfect opportunity to develop paddleboarding skills without concern for the tides and currents of open water," says Foster.

Boards, paddles and personal flotation devices will be provided. Also on hand will be an assistant instructor per 10 participants, to ensure safety on the water.

Each course is $30 for residents of Charleston County, or $36 for non-county residents. When registering for multiple courses, rates can drop to as low as $15 per course. Discounts are designed to encourage the registering of multiple courses to optimize progression and results.

Space is limited. For more information or to register, visit or call (843) 795-4386.
