YWCA Announces Second Century Campaign
7/10/2013 3:11:28 PM

Chas, SC- The YWCA Greater Charleston has announced its Second Century campaign to raise funds and increase memberships for the Charleston women’s organization founded July 4, 1907. Christine O. Jackson, who served 36 years as YWCA executive director from 1968-2004, is the campaign chair. Jackson, a first cousin of the late Coretta Scott King, successfully led the effort to establish the Charleston branch as a racially integrated affiliate of the national YWCA in the late 1960’s. Under Jackson, the YWCA initiated numerous projects such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, Tribute To Women In Industry (T.W.I.N.), Harvey Gantt Triumph Award, and children’s day and after school care programs and summer camps.

“The YWCA’s Second Century campaign pays tribute to the thousands of volunteers and corporate, municipal and civic leaders like Mrs. Jackson, who support our mission to eliminate racism and empower women,” said YWCA executive director Kathleen Rodgers. According to Rodgers, the Second Century theme will be used annually for other YWCA projects that highlight the group’s July 4 founding. “On our nation’s Independence Day this year, the YWCA marks its 106th year of service to the Carolina Lowcountry. We have lots of ideas for ‘second century’ observances in the years ahead.”

The Charleston YWCA currently has some 400 members. The second century campaign seeks to enroll another 200 members. “We have not set a specific dollar goal for this inaugural second century campaign. Symbolically, we’d like to raise $1,000 for each year that the YWCA has been in operation,” said Rodgers. The YWCA will assess the campaign’s fund raising progress at its annual donor’s reception in late October 2013.
