S.C. Elementary Schools Signing Up for BlueChoice Walking Program
5/21/2013 11:00:08 AM

Columbia, S.C. – BlueChoice® HealthPlan of South Carolina is inviting elementary schools across the state to take part in a free walking program aimed at boosting physical fitness and reducing childhood obesity.

“WalkingWorksSM for South Carolina Schools” is now in its fourth year as one of the “Great Expectations® for health” disease management and wellness programs offered statewide by BlueChoice®. In WalkingWorks, BlueChoice provides pedometers and a chart to track progress as well as educational materials about healthy food choices. The program is designed for kindergarten through fifth grade.

Schools designate a physical education teacher or other representative to coordinate the program, determine the number of participating students and classrooms, and commit to having students walk for at least five minutes per day.

The 2012 program involved more than 23,000 students in 1,054 classrooms at 45 schools. Springdale Elementary School in West Columbia and Ebenezer Avenue Leadership Academy in Rock Hill took top honors as 2012 WalkingWorks winners.

“Children who walk regularly will improve their health and set patterns to carry them into adulthood. These days, in the age of nonstop TV, gaming and texting, children are heavier and more inactive than ever We want to support our teachers as they encourage students to improve their health by meeting physical activity recommendations,” said Rolanda Aiken, BlueChoice’s vice president of population health.

Deadline for enrollment in the fall semester program is Aug. 15. Schools should enroll by June 15 if they want to receive materials in the mail. Schools enrolling June 15-Aug 15 will receive print-ready materials by email. To register, call 803-382-5289 or toll-free 800-327-3183 ext. 25289.

BlueChoice’s Great Expectations programs help educate its members about their overall health or about a specific disease or condition. Health professionals at BlueChoice oversee the programs, supporting the care plans developed by members’ doctors.

In addition to “WalkingWorks for South Carolina Schools,” BlueChoice HealthPlan has Great Expectations programs for alcohol management, asthma, back care, childhood obesity, children’s health, chronic kidney disease, COPD, depression, diabetes, heart disease, heart failure, blood pressure and cholesterol management, maternity, men’s health, migraine, pre-diabetes, smoking cessation, weight loss and women’s health.
