St. James-Santee Elementary School students Tyaisha Vanderhorst, Dinystee Porcher and Destiny Green prepare for the school’s news show with Humphrey the Hamster. The students, their families, faculty and staff are all reading The World According to Humphrey as part of the One School, One Book school wide book club.

McClellanville — On April 22nd, 2013, St. James-Santee Elementary School embarked on a special project, an all school book club called One School, One Book. Every family from kindergarten through sixth grade received a copy of the same book, Betty G. Birney’s The World According to Humphrey. Teachers, staff and Principal Joe Sampson are also reading the book, one chapter each day for 15 days.

Teacher Librarian Kim Livingston told the students about the family reading time and presented the students with the books during a special assembly at which the new library pet, a hamster named Humphrey, was introduced. “It is wonderful to see our students excited about reading a book, and I’ve enjoyed reading the book as well. We hope that our families are reading together, that is our ultimate goal, promoting family reading and togetherness.”

To encourage students to read a chapter a night, students answer trivia questions announced on the school’s news show.
