On April 11, 2013, BMW Manufacturing hosted more than 1,000 women- and minority-owned businesses, introducing them to over 100 of the company’s Tier 1 suppliers at the second annual Tier 1 Supplier Diversity Matchmaker Conference. The concept allows BMW to spread its message of diversity and allows small businesses valuable networking opportunities.

“Many of our suppliers need the same type of businesses that BMW needs,” said Louise Connell, Senior Buyer/Supplier Diversity Specialist, BMW Procurement North America. “BMW’s goal is to create a networking event that brings MBEs (Minority Business Enterprises) and WBEs (Women Business Enterprises) together with our Tier 1 suppliers.”

BMW Group’s Global Diversity Manager, Tassilo Wirth, was a keynote speaker at the event and called the conference “a win-win situation for BMW”. “BMW Group supports women- and minority-owned businesses,” Wirth said. “People with different backgrounds and different problem-solving strategies offer innovative ideas and sustainable performance. This conference certainly helps those efforts.”

Lesa Rivers, the Director of Supplier Diversity at Staples, a Tier Supplier to BMW Manufacturing, attended the event saying, “It was one of the most well executed diversity events I have attended. We met some diverse companies and are going to have more conversation regarding the services they offer.”

“It was truly a first class event in every regard,” wrote Karen Knuckles, the owner of Express Employment Professionals, a women-owned staffing company.
