The Mu Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity celebrated their annual Mardi Gras Affair weekend at the Omar Shrine Temple on April 5th and 6th. The Mardi Gras events over the course of the two nights entertained the Charleston community with music from the Gullah Rootz on Friday evening and the dazzling sounds of local songstress Quiana Parler and trumpeter extraordinaire Charlton Singleton on Saturday. The funds generated from the events aid in supporting the youth initiatives and scholarship programs of the Mu Alpha chapter. Over 1,000 attendees were treated to a seafood calabash on Friday and then followed by a high-energy cabaret affair hosted by Bro. Doug Stewart, nationally known sports commentator from ESPN.
The crowning of Miss Mardi Gras 2013, Miss Everlyn Campbell, highlighted the Saturday evening program. Miss Jenille Dawson and Nicole Green Hunter were first and second runner up respectively. The Miss Mardi Gras candidates participated in the fundraising campaign and received Scrolls of Honor from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for their outstanding contributions and efforts. The 2013 Mardi Gras committee was chaired by Bro. Anthony Freeman and Bro. Kurt Walker.
Some of the programs that are supported include the annual Sixth District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Summer Camp, Achievement Week college scholarships and the Black History Bowl competition.
