Riverbanks Shatters Single-Day Attendance Record
4/11/2013 2:07:48 PM

Columbia, SC – Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is boasting another wildly successful spring break. During the seven day stretch from Monday, April 1 to Sunday, April 7, the Zoo welcomed a total of 55,175 guests and set a single-day spring break attendance record of 12,979 visitors on Saturday, April 6.

“The numbers are impressive,” said Satch Krantz, president and CEO of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. “In one day alone, crowds in the park totaled more than the number of people living in the city of Cayce.” The latest count provided by the U.S. Census Bureau shows the city of Cayce with a population of 12,743.

In addition, spring break Saturday proved to be a towering success for Sky-High Safari, the Zoo’s 4-story vertical ropes course with a record 544 climbers. Two other attractions also reported tall numbers for that day including Riverbanks’ Giraffe Overlook where guests hand-fed 4,800 pieces of lettuce to the giraffes and the Zoo’s Lorikeet Aviary where nearly 1,000 cups of nectar were fed to the pint-size birds.

“Large crowds are typical during spring break week, which traditionally kicks off our busiest time of year,” Krantz said. “Daily attendance averages more than 9,800 people during peak season.”

In 2011, a spring break Saturday brought in 12,088 guests and a record 63,513 people visited the Zoo during spring break week 2010.

To accommodate increasing crowds, Krantz adds that Riverbanks is looking at plans to develop additional parking as part of a $32-million dollar expansion recently approved by Richland and Lexington counties. In addition, the Zoo has purchased a new, custom-built tram designed to seat more passengers travelling to and from the Garden, which will shorten wait times and lines at the tram stop.
