LADSON, SC – The first private practice in the Lowcountry dedicated solely to pediatric ophthalmology has opened in Ladson. Ophthalmologist Dr. Ron Teed, formerly of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), has opened Children’s Eye Specialists at 9565 Hwy 78, Building 600.
The practice will offer the full spectrum of pediatric ophthalmology services, including optical correction with glasses, management of lazy eye, eye muscle problems, eye lid problems, cataracts, glaucoma, retinal diseases and refractive medical and surgical conditions of pediatric eyes. Dr. Teed also specializes in adult strabismus, which is a misalignment of the eyes.
The Ladson office is brand new with state-of-the-art equipment and offers a fun, child-centered environment for the comfort and care of patients.
“We are establishing this practice to more fully devote our time and energy to offering the best ophthalmic care to the community, the region and the state,” says Dr. Teed. “We chose Ladson because of the incredible growth in the North Charleston and Summerville areas, which allows us to be close to both and serve not just patients in the region but across the state.”
Beginning in May, Dr. Teed will also have office hours in Columbia at the Columbia Eye Clinic Northeast office at 100 Summit Centre Drive. He will also be the only pediatric ophthalmologist in private practice in Columbia.
Originally from Arizona, Dr. Teed holds a bachelor’s in psychology and biology from the University of Arizona and received his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He completed his residency at the Vanderbilt Eye Institute and then finished specialized training in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Teed continued to serve at MUSC as a clinical instructor and assistant professor through 2012. He is board certified in ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Locally, he is a member of the South Carolina Medical Association, South Carolina Society of Ophthalmology, Charleston Medical Society and Charleston Ophthalmology Association.
Dr. Teed has received numerous honors, including Physician of the Month from MUSC, the Pierre Gautier Jenkins Award for Resident Education at the Storm Eye Institute at MUSC and the Outstanding Oculoplastics Award from Vanderbilt University. He has also contributed articles and book chapters to numerous publications, as well as presented and lectured at a variety of programs on the subjects of complicated strabismus, retinopathy of prematurity and adult strabismus.
