Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

ChasSC- Nine worship services open the 41st Annual MLK Celebration on Sunday, January 13, featuring top clergy and civic officials, choirs and color guard units, praise dancers, award ceremonies and other tributes to the slain civil rights leader. The services are open to the public and expected to draw thousands of lowcountry supporters of Dr. King, leaders of civil and human rights groups and congregants of numerous religious faiths. The YWCA Greater Charleston sponsors the MLK Celebration. The 2013 overall theme is: “Working for the American Dream.”

According to YWCA Executive Director Kathleen Rodgers, more than 100 volunteers are involved in planning the area worship services. “Our total MLK volunteer force amounts to well over 1,000 persons. They are a diverse representation of the community and their efforts are vitally important to YWCA year-round programs,” Rodgers said.

“A Drive to Keep the Dream Alive” is the title of the 2013 effort to gather church and individual patron donors. Some 34 churches tri-countywide collected more than 1,000 individual patron contributors. The MLK Ecumenical Committee guides this overall effort chaired by Rev. Robert Capers of Salem Presbyterian and Bethel Presbyterian churches and co-chairs Father Dow Sanderson of the Church of the Holy Communion and Rev. Leonard Griffin of Morris Street Baptist Church.
