Crowning Glory Program Allows Local Stylist, Shermica Fabers, to Give the Gift of “You” to Local Women

CHARLESTON, SC, November 30, 2012 – Lowcountry salon Hair For U is delivering Christmas wishes to women who suffer from severe medical illnesses. Through Hair For U’s Crowning Glory program, salon owner Shermica Fabers is raising funds to give the gift of “you” to women who have experienced hair loss as a result of illness, medical treatments, cancer or scalp conditions. The mission of Crowning Glory is to provide transformations for women who cannot afford to obtain the pieces for themselves.  Because creating custom hairpieces is a labor- and material-intensive process, the cost of obtaining these pieces is usually out of range for most women. Hair For U's Crowning Glory Program is set to deliver Christmas wishes and to provide custom-made hairpieces by December 25th to many women suffering from illnesses. Shermica who has been diagnosed with alopecia, a hair loss disorder, says she "created the Crowning Glory Program to help provide assistance to these women and to help them reclaim a bit of who they are.” Local organizations and individuals can join forces with Hair For U and participate in bringing holiday joy by donating at or by calling 843.324.4831 by or before December 14th.

When Shermica discovered that she was losing her hair to a condition called alopecia, she immediately felt that without her “crowning glory” she was no longer the person – the woman – that she had been before. As a stylist, her livelihood was dependent upon making others look good and her own looks had a great deal to do with how she attracted her clients. After all, how could one be a hair stylist without hair? So she did her research and tried in vain to locate places that offered wigs, hairpieces or styling options for women like her who had lost their hair as a result of skin and scalp conditions, medical treatments, cancer or illness. What she discovered was disheartening, to say the least.  Not only were the options few, but they were also expensive and did not look natural. Determined not to be discouraged, she began creating and styling her own unique hair pieces. This caught the eye of several clients who inquired about her services; thus Hair For U was born.

As more women contacted Shermica to inquire about obtaining a hair piece or custom-designed wig, she was struck by the emotional and physical transformation she witnessed when providing a client with a finished hair piece. “These women felt so undervalued, so alone and so ashamed of themselves because of their hair loss,” said Fabers. “It was such a transforming process to see them become confident, engaged and motivated again.”

With the holidays approaching, Shermica understands all too well what it feels like for a woman who has lost her hair to be thrust into public situations with family and friends. “You can’t enjoy yourself, your family or the activity because you’re not yourself,” she said.  “Far too often, I and the other women I’ve encountered talked about how they felt like they wished they were invisible and how they felt that a large part of who they are as a person was missing because their hair was.”

Donations for the Crowning Glory Program are now being accepted. Hair For U is passionate about educating clients and patients about hair care needs specific to their situation or medical disability.
