Statement made by Marilyn Hemingway, founder, and president of the Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce:
“It is unacceptable that in two weeks, we find ourselves in a continuing loop of a Santee Cooper employee sharing their racism on social media for all the world to see. There is something deeply flawed at Santee Cooper and it must change.
The Gullah Geechee Chamber calls for the immediate dismissal of the offending employee and the immediate implementation of an independent racial sensitivity training from the Board of Directors, Executive team and through all employee ranks including contractors.
We have serious concerns regarding Santee Cooper’s desire to be inclusive of the diverse communities they serve in South Carolina. After the first racial incident, we would hope that Santee Cooper issued a corporate-wide memo condemning any racial actions.
Considering recent societal changes regarding race and racism, doing just enough to address discrimination and racial harassment is no longer acceptable. Santee Cooper, the state-owned utility needs to be a leading changemaker. If they can’t do it, they need to get out of the way.
The Gullah Geechee Chamber will continue to seek accountability and transparency from Santee Cooper as South Carolina legislators debate the utilities future.”
The Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to creating global awareness, profitability and sustainability of African American businesses and entities that support the Gullah Geechee community
