The Youth Leadership Committee in collaboration with Target 4: The Arts! Committee of the Gamma Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated presented the Youth Leadership Talent and Fashion Show on February 12, 2020 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

The program featured the Chapter’s Prospective Debutantes who so wonderfully used their individual talents to render homage to great artisans of the past. The theme was “A Tribute to the Harlem Renaissance: A Century of Artistic Explosion.”

The Prospective Debutantes’ selections were marvelously presented by means of poetic recitations, music–instrumental and vocal expressions, praise and tap-dancing exercises, painting and basket weaving displays and fashions of the era were modeled. Each participant eloquently stated her reason for selecting the genre she demonstrated/presented. They admirably portrayed the artistic and creative genius of accomplished people who created the Harlem Renaissance Movement.

The atmosphere at the program was fun-filled and educational. It was designed to evoke an appreciation for and knowledge of the culture, triumphs, and creative genius of persons who lived with racism and oppression in truly dire times. An enraptured audience marveled at the performances and demonstrated appreciation by clapping, laughing, cheering, and modeling attire of the era.

All participants received gifts and, of course, there were many cameras in action. Words of appreciation and encouragement were given by: Mrs. Angela Burke, Chairman, Target 4, The Arts; Mrs. Deronda C. Washington, Chairman, Talent Showcase, Mrs. Carmelita Pryor, Chairman, Youth Leadership Committee, and Mrs. Dena G. Magwood, President of Gamma Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
