Jirah Perkins’ “A Homage to Black GirlHood” Featured at Saul Alexander Gallery

MISS MARY MACK: A Homage to Black Girlhood will be up for display and purchase at Charleston County Public Library’s Saul Alexander Gallery from March 2 to March 31. The opening reception will be held from 6-7pm at the Saul Alexander Gallery. Join featured artist Jirah E. Perkins for a sensory experience as she shares some of her adolescent memories and those of others through her work. This event is free and open to the public.

Jirah Perkins is a 23-year-old emerging artist in the Lowcountry. She believes that collective work and responsibility are pertinent in creating a cohesive and understanding being. Perkins experiments through different mediums and styles with a focus on empowering and uplifting women.

This art exhibition is inspired by the children’s singing and clapping game, “Miss Mary Mack.” In African-American communities, hand games represented a communal expression of upbringing before the systematic erasure of adolescence. “Miss Mary Mack” honors the flair, togetherness and unadulterated joy of black girlhood. ⁣
