Three Midlands school leaders earn top South Carolina awards

The South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA) has named three school leaders from the Midlands as the 2020 South Carolina Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year, the 2020 South Carolina Middle Level Principal of the Year, and the 2020 South Carolina Secondary Principal of the Year.

Dr. Twanisha Garner, assistant principal at Langford Elementary School in Richland School District Two, is the 2020 Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year; Dr. Robin Coletrain, principal of W.A. Perry Middle School in Richland School District One, is the 2020 Middle Level Principal of the Year; and Mrs. Sonya Bryant, principal of Batesburg-Leesville High School in Lexington School District Three, is the 2020 Secondary Principal of the Year. All three award winners were selected from outstanding fields of administrator candidates by a veteran panel of judges.

2020 South Carolina Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year:

Dr. Twanisha Garner, Langford Elementary School, Richland School District Two

“We are excited to announce that Dr. Twanisha Garner has been named the SCASA Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year,” said Beth Phibbs, executive director of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators. “She is an outstanding leader who is well respected and valued by the students, parents, faculty, and staff of Langford Elementary School.”

Principal of Langford Elementary School, Mrs. Kaseena Jackson said, “As an instructional leader at Langford Elementary, Dr. Garner supports teachers as they educate future leaders. She champions our school’s commitment to providing personalized authentic learning experiences for all students. The entire Langford Elementary family benefits from her dedication to building community and creating a positive environment for teaching and learning.”

Superintendent of Richland School District Two, Dr. Baron R. Davis added, “Dr. Garner is a dedicated educator who motivates all members of the school family to cultivate an instructional environment that is focused on continuous improvement and high academic achievement for all students. She strives daily to give all students and teachers opportunities to maximize their gifts and talents as they pursue their pathways to purpose.”

The other finalists for 2020 SC Assistant Elementary Principal of the Year were Clarissa Bennett, assistant principal at Roundtop Elementary School in Richland School District Two and Ginger Baggette, assistant principal at Delmae Elementary School in Florence School District One. The criteria used in the selection of this award are set by the National Association of Elementary School Principals. The state sponsors are Horace Mann and Herff Jones.

2020 South Carolina Middle Level Principal of the Year:

Dr. Robin Coletrain, W.A. Perry Middle School, Richland School District One

Beth Phibbs continued, “We are pleased to announce that Dr. Robin Coletrain has been named the SCASA Middle Level Principal of the Year. She is an innovative leader who has built a culture of excellence at W.A. Perry which is rooted in compassion and collaboration.”

Superintendent of Richland School District One, Dr. Craig Witherspoon added, “Dr. Coletrain is a great example of a school leader who inspires staff, students and parents to do their best at all times. She also works tirelessly to engage community partners to support the school’s mission of improving student outcomes.”

The other finalist for 2020 SC Middle Level Principal of the Year was Karis Mazyck, principal of Blythewood Middle School in Richland School District Two. The criteria used in the selection of this award are set by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The state sponsors are Horace Mann and Herff Jones.

2020 South Carolina Secondary Principal of the Year:

Mrs. Sonya Bryant, Batesburg-Leesville High School, Lexington School District Three

“We are thrilled to announce that Sonya Bryant has been named the SCASA Secondary Principal of the Year,” said Beth Phibbs, “She is an extraordinary leader who sets high expectations for all students at Batesburg-Leesville High School and provides the resources necessary for them to be successful.”

Interim Superintendent of Lexington School District Three, Dr. Stephen Hefner added, “You don’t have to be in the presence of Sonya Bryant for very long to recognize that she genuinely loves her students at Batesburg-Leesville High School and is passionate about ensuring that each and every one of them succeeds—not just while they’re under her wings, but following graduation as well. She has created a culture at Batesburg-Leesville High School where success is expected, not hoped for, and she models this behavior daily for her students and staff.”

The criteria used in the selection of this award are set by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The state sponsors are Horace Mann and Herff Jones.

SCASA, the professional organization for school leaders in South Carolina, has more than 4,400 members. From professional development opportunities and research, to publications and legislative advocacy, SCASA’s focus is to support school leaders in providing the best possible education for South Carolina’s young people.
