BOXTOROW Polls: FAMU still tops in HBCU football; slight shift in polls as Savannah State makes history

The North Carolina A&T Aggies’ win over South Carolina State in the marquee game of the weekend caused slight shifts in both the BOXTOROW Coaches and Media Polls. Florida A&M defeated Delaware State and remained No. 1.

In the coaches poll, idle Alcorn State and A&T remained No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. No. 4 Bethune-Cookman and No. 5 Southern, coming off its win over Alabama A&M, each moved up one spot, while SCSU dropped two spots to No. 6. Jackson State, currently on a three-game winning streak including Saturday’s victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, moved into the poll at No. 10 with UAPB dropping out.

In the media poll, the top four spots remained the same, occupied by Florida A&M, Alcorn State, N.C. A&T and Bowie State, who remains undefeated. Virginia Union reentered the poll at No. 10, while Savannah State made its first appearance ever, debuting tied for No. 8 (Virginia State). The Tigers defeated Fort Valley State and have wrapped up the SIAC Eastern Division.

The BOXTOROW HBCU FCS coaches poll and media poll is administered by FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW. The coaches poll, in its 11th year is voted on by the HBCU Football Championship Subdivision coaches and the media poll, in its 13th year, is voted on by media members around the country who cover HBCU football.

BOXTOROW National Player of the Week: D’Vonn Gibbons

Savannah State Quarterback D’Vonn Gibbons, 6-3, 205, Junior, Stone Mountain, Ga.

Gibbons accounted for 220 yards of total offense and six touchdowns as the Tigers defeated Fort Valley State 53-24. Gibbons carried the ball 17 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns and completed 5-of-8 passes for 75 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

The win propelled the Tigers to the SIAC Eastern championship.
