The first top five game of the football season along with other games caused some movement in the BOXTOROW Coaches and Media Polls.
In the coaches poll, North Carolina A&T had a bye but remained No. 1 and received all of the first place votes. No. 2 Bethune-Cookman defeated North Carolina Central and No. 3 Alcorn State defeated Savannah State to retain respective rankings from last week. No. 4 Florida A&M defeated South Carolina State 42-38 on the road and retained its ranking from last week. SCSU dropped two spots to No. 6, while Southern defeated Prairie View A&M and moved to No. 5. The No. 7 Panthers dropped two spots.
In the media poll, No. 2 Alcorn State and No. 3 Bethune-Cookman switched spots from last week as did No. 4 Florida A&M and No. 5 South Carolina State. No. 6 Bowie State remained unbeaten and moved up one spot. No. 10
Virginia Union moved into the top 10 for the first time this season.
The BOXTOROW HBCU FCS coaches poll and media poll are administered by FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW. The coaches poll, in its 11th year is voted on by the HBCU Football Championship Subdivision coaches and the media poll, in its 13th year, is voted on by media members around the country who cover HBCU football.
BOXTOROW National Player of the Week: Austin Hensley
Hensley completed 28-of-38 passes for 414 yards with six touchdowns to help lead the Yellow Jackets to a 42-38 come-from-behind victory over Fairmont State. Hensley found Zach Pete for a 13-yard touchdown pass and catch with :15 remaining.
Hensley came back from a season-ending injury in 2017, gradually worked his way back in 2018, and has completed 61 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards and 14 touchdowns in just six games this season. The Yellow Jackets are now 5-1 on the season, 5-0 in Mountain East Conference play. WVSU’s only loss was to FCS opponent Southeast Missouri State.
