Talk to the Hand, Mr. President

By Beverly Gadson-Birch

I have been telling y’all all along that we have a serious problem with racism in America and it accelerated once #45, President Trump, took office. President Trump ran on “Make America Great Again.” If you didn’t catch the meaning of Trump’s slogan, in the beginning, and you are still in “la, la” land, it just might be too late for you. Trump was appealing to the same dissidents that have come up from the backwoods of Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi, just to name a few historically “suppression states” but he was also appealing to anyone who supports the “white” agenda. There are still some very mean-spirited white folk who think they were created superior to every other race on earth.

The recent shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas serve as a warning that anyone can be caught up in the violence. If you thought it couldn’t get any worse when the Charleston Nine were gunned down in church—the least likely place you would expect a gunman to show up, think again!  Now, we find ourselves prisoners of fears everywhere. You find yourself looking over your shoulder at the mall, at the grocery store, at a theatre, i.e.

Gun violence has escalated since #45 took office simply because he has advocated such. You see Make America Great Again simply means, “Make America White Again.” A segment of the white population firmly believes that America was great when white plantation owners worked slaves in cotton and tobacco fields for 75 cents a day. That’s right, not 75 cents an hour but a day. Black folks were thought of as less than a human being. And, they were treated as such.

Every gain Black folk made in America had to be court ordered—voting rights, public transportation, walking in the park, school integration, public accommodations, restrooms, eating and sleeping in hotels, etc. White folk never got over integration and interracial marriage. Then, along came #45 to reassure those with “racist” views that I will return America to those “happier times.” I will turn back the hands of time. I will put people in high office to carry out the “white” agenda.

On top of all of #45’s rantings, he has the unmitigated gall to support white supremacy on one hand while reading a teleprompter and decrying racism on the other hand. Please give me a break! Trump has fueled racism in this country to the point that mostly young white males who have no knowledge or very little knowledge of slavery feel they must defend and protect their land and their ladies from black folk who just want to “take over.” They only know what they have been taught.  They did not live through slavery; so, how would they know unless they have been taught?

Now that this gun violence is out of control and now that Trump finally knows how to read a teleprompter, he implores the American people to “speak in one voice and condemn racism, bigotry, and white supremacy. These sinister ideologies must be defeated. Hate has no place in America.” Well, #45, Talk to the Hand. I have no respect for you. America has no place for you.  America has no place for anyone who advocates and supports racism or suppression of any race. I know y’all didn’t ask me; but, I’se just saying.
