The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs is now accepting artwork submissions for consideration for the 2019 MOJA Arts Festival’s Juried Art Exhibition. The MOJA Arts Festival is an 11-day multi-disciplinary celebration of African-American and Caribbean culture produced by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the MOJA Planning Committee. MOJA’s wide range of events include visual arts, dance, gospel, jazz, poetry, R&B, classical music, storytelling, theatre, children’s activities, traditional crafts, ethnic food, and more. This year’s festival is Sept. 26 – Oct. 6, 2019. The 2019 MOJA Arts Festival Juried Art Exhibition will be held at the Cannon Street Arts Center, juried by artist Alvin Glen.
￼Juror: Alvin Glen
A native of Dorchester, South Carolina, Alvin B. Glen began drawing at an early age. Graduating from South Carolina State University, in 1979, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education, he went on to become a certified Art instructor, Band Director, and was voted Teacher of the Year. He currently teaches art at Harleyville-Ridgeville Middle School, and has been an art teacher for 31 years. As for Alvin’s work, his earlier work contained mixed-media; (pencils, fabric dyes and spray paints). Presently, he combines those medium with watercolor, dye and pencils. His work is mostly inspired by children and the elderly. He sometimes creates work reminiscent of people and events from his past, church, school and even his students. He has competed in many juried art exhibitions, served as an art exhibition juror and has exhibited in solo and group art exhibitions extensively, including Columbia Museum, Columbia, SC, Black Arts Festival, Atlanta, GA, MOJA Arts Festival, Charleston, SC, Piccolo Spoleto Festival, Charleston, SC, I.P. Stanback Museum at S.C. State University, Orangeburg, SC, the Spartanburg Arts Center, Spartanburg, SC and a host of other venues. His work is in numerous private, public and corporate collections.Currently, he is exhibiting at the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery in Charleston, SC.
￼Entry Specifications/ Eligible Works
Proposed artwork must have been completed within the last two years and may not have been previously exhibited in the Charleston region. Artwork in the following categories may be submitted: oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, printmaking, drawing, photography, and graphics. Additional work in fiber, sculpture, metals, ceramics, basketry and mixed media will also be juried, however, space constraints will dictate our ability to exhibit. Wall pieces must be framed and ready for hanging. Freestanding pieces must be fully assembled and ready for installation. Accepted artwork may not be removed before the assigned time. Early removal or late pick-up will result in disqualification from future participation. An exhibition program listing participating artists, their phone number, title and value of artwork will be available. The City of Charleston provides damage and theft insurance for artwork while on display. Please be aware that the exhibition space is unable to store any packing materials or crates at delivery from local artists. Out-of-state artists are responsible for packing, insuring, and shipping (to and from the exhibition space) their works if they are chosen.
Estimated art delivery date for the exhibition is Sept. 18. All artists living in the state of South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, and Georgia are invited to submit. Please include the artwork title, medium, and size in the description of each piece.
Submitted artwork must comply fully with the following requirements for originality and date of completion: (1) The artwork is an original creation completed within the last two years and is not, in whole or in part, a copy of any person’s work or photograph and (2) the artwork was created solely by the artist and not in a workshop, class, or under supervision of an instructor.
