The National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc. will host its 34th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Friday, September 27, 2019, in Atlanta, Georgia at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. Each year, graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are inducted into the Hall of Fame for significant contributions made in their respective fields. This event ensures and promotes the viability of HBCUs and highlights the accomplishments of their alumni.
Among this year’s class is Attorney William H. Johnson, Sr. who will be inducted in the category of Government and Law. A native of Orangeburg, SC, Attorney William H. Johnson, Sr. obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Claflin University in 1972. He received his Law Degree, Juris Doctor degree (JD) and his Master of Laws degree (LL.M) in Trial Advocacy, respectively, from Duke and Temple Universities. He is licensed to practice in North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia, all Federal District Courts, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.
Attorney Johnson has served in a number of legal and community leadership positions; including as court-appointed Arbitrator for the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and as Arbitrator and Mediator for the U.S. Federal Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He has served as President of the Barristers Association of Philadelphia and as the National Bar Association’s Regional Director for the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. He has also served as a member of the following Board of Directors: the Philadelphia Public Interest Law Center, the Philadelphia Bar Education Center, the Metropolitan Career Center of Philadelphia and the National Bar Association Board of Governors. In addition to previously serving as a member of Claflin University’s Board of Visitors, he currently serves on its Board of Trustees and Chairs its Audit Committee.
For his community leadership and distinguished legal service, Attorney Johnson has received various forms of recognition and commendation; including, being named to “Who’s Who American Law”, as a recipient of the Philadelphia Urban League Leadership Institute’s “Cecil B. Moore Award” and the Boy Scouts of America “Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award”. He is also the recipient of official “letters of Commendation” from President Jimmy Carter in recognition of his significant leadership role as Counsel to the United States Senate Commerce Committee Surface Transportation Subcommittee.
