Charleston County Parks hosting Special Needs Prom August 17 in Mount Pleasant

The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) is proud to regularly provide recreation and social opportunities for community members of all abilities. As part of these efforts, CCPRC invites people with special needs to dance the night away at a spectacular celebration on Saturday, Aug. 17.

People with special needs, their families and their caregivers are invited to attend the prom, held at the R. L. Jones Center in Mount Pleasant at 391 Egypt Road. This year’s prom is 1950s sock hop-themed. The event will take place from 6 – 8 p.m. with a DJ playing music that will get the dance floor rocking!

Tickets are $4 in advance and $5 at the door if still available. Chaperones and children 3 and under are free. Due to this event’s popular demand, advance purchase is recommended.

Before the prom, female attendees are invited to attend “Say Yes to the Dress” on Sunday, Aug. 11, where women can pick out complimentary evening dresses to wear to the event. This event will take place at Cypress Hall at North Charleston Wannamaker County Park from 1 – 4 p.m.

Registration for the Special Needs Prom is available by calling 843-795-4386. If available, tickets will also be sold on site. The Special Needs Prom and Say Yes to the Dress are made possible through the help of many generous supporters, including the Town of Mount Pleasant Recreation Department, which donates the facility; Charleston Flower Market, which donates corsages for participants; Reinvented Resale, which donates formal dresses and jewelry; and Lowcountry Entertainment, which provides DJ services.

The Special Needs Prom is presented in conjunction with CCPRC’s AccessABILITY program. This program strives to meet the growing needs of community members with disabilities by providing therapeutically-based recreation offerings for people with cognitive and physical disabilities to promote physical fitness, health, wellness, increased self-esteem and greater independence. Other CCPRC AccessABILITY program events include four Special Needs Swim Nights at Charleston County waterparks this summer. Remaining dates are July 20 and 28 at Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark in North Charleston, and July 27 at Splash Zone Waterpark on James Island.
