Carolina Youth Action Project Hosts Rock Camp Showcase

Join Carolina Youth Action Project (CYAP) at the Palmetto Scholars Academy Saturday, July 20 for Rock Camp Charleston’s 9th annual Camp Showcase event. This year’s lineup includes both new and returning campers forming 11 bands performing original music.

Rock Camp is a week-long leadership development initiative that lives at the intersection of art and political education. During this one-week summer camp program youth form bands, take instrument instruction in guitar, bass, drums, or keys, and participate in workshops. All workshops are focused on Carolina Youth Action Project’s core values: youth power, political education, creative resistance, transformative justice, prison abolition, and collective liberation. In addition, bands work together to write original music. At the end-of-camp Showcase, these camper bands – with enormous courage – stand in front of an audience of family, friends, and Charleston community members to perform their original songs live.

In addition to new and returning campers, CYAP has a parallel youth leadership institute The Youth Leader Institute (YLI) aims to equip girls, trans youth, and gender nonconforming youth ages 13-18 with the skills, support, and critical analysis necessary to lead a movement for radical and lasting change in South Carolina. YLI serves as an organizing crash course, equipping young people with the tools to effectively build and sustain a base of folks who support and are invested in our campaign work.

Youth leaders will be skilled up as facilitators and organizers. They’ll discuss critical issues within the scope of transformative justice and reproductive justice and learn about various base building tactics. YLI will prepare folks to amplify our two campaigns: Safer Schools Without SROs and Sex Education Beyond Abstinence. CYAP’s Youth Leaders also write original music and perform music at our end-of-camp showcase.
