NYC Based Harambee Dance Company Returns To Charleston To Celebrate 25th Anniversary

Harambee Dance Company, a New York based African American dance company, celebrates its 25th Anniversary with an “Evening of Dance”.  The event is set to take place on Saturday, July 6, 2019, 6p.m. at James Island Charter High School Theater, Charleston, SC.

This spectacular event will feature Harambee Dance Company’s signature pieces which blend traditional African dance vocabulary, modern dance, and contemporary themes, and will also include Charleston artists Season with Duane Branch and gospel singers and Jazz by Rochelle Whitney. The audience will experience a brilliant dance concert set to live music.

This performance is more than just a 25th anniversary celebration for Harambee, it’s a homecoming celebration as well. The company directors, Frank and Sandella Malloy, both Charleston natives and James Island High School graduates, founded the group in Charleston in 1994 and have chosen to return to James Island High to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Since relocating Harambee to New York in 1996, the company has performed at both national and international events and venues such as Panafest in Ghana, Lincoln Center NYC, Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival in MA, Hudson River Festival NYC, Dance Africa NYC, Kennedy Center Wash, DC, Soulevate NYC and Africussion in Taiwan with the Ju Percussion Group, Toronto’s Caribana Festival etc.

“An Evening of Dance” is made possible by the Whaley Family Reunion, James Island, S.C. and Fields Farm, Johns Island, S.C.  For information and details, contact Harambee Dance Company at (347)621-8867.
