Charleston County School District recently announced and welcomed LaToya Smith as interim assistant principal of Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary. Smith has served as an elementary instructional specialist in Curriculum and Instruction with the district for the past two years. Smith joined the Learning Services team in 2017 from Chicora Elementary School where she served as lead teacher.
Prior to her time at Chicora, Smith was an instructional coach for CCSD’s Innovation Zone and Charleston Promise Neighborhood Learning Communities and a teacher coach at North Charleston Elementary School. Before becoming a lead teacher and coach, Smith taught fifth grade at North Charleston, fourth grade in Rockdale County School District in Georgia, and middle grades math in DeKalb County and Beaufort County schools. Smith is a certified instructional coach by the Lastinger Institute and holds a Read to Succeed endorsement.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in Family Consumer Science Education from South Carolina State University, Master of Art in Elementary Education from Wheelock College, and master’s degree in Administration and Supervision from Southern Wesleyan University
