In association with youth and junior triathlon coaching specialists Palmetto TRIbe, the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission will host its second annual Youth Triathlon on July 27 at James Island County Park. The event is open to ages 7 to 15 and is the only one in the area to offer an open-water swim.
The multi-sport event will be held on a safe, well-monitored course within James Island County Park and the swim portion will take place in the park’s lake. After the swim, participants will traverse the shaded paths and roads inside the park for the bike and run segments of the race.
“Triathlons are such a great option for kids that may not enjoy traditional team sports,” said CCPRC Health & Wellness Race, Event and Program Manager Allison Foster. “It is all about having fun, challenging youth to move and think outside of the box. Our goal is to create a safe, supportive environment that is as welcoming to new kids as it is to our returning athletes.”
The race will begin at 7:15 a.m. on Saturday, July 27. The course is contained inside the park and the open-water swim will be monitored by CCPRC’s safety and lifeguarding teams. Distances will vary based on the age of participants. Ages 7-10 will complete a 100-yard swim, a 3-mile bike and a 1-mile run. Ages 11-15 will make their way through a 200-yard swim, a 6-mile bike and a 2-mile run.
All participants will receive a finisher’s medal and age group awards will be presented to the top three males and females in the categories of ages 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-15. After the race, participants are invited to take advantage of a Chick-fil-A sponsored breakfast and free entry to Splash Zone. Registration is $45 and is available at CharlestonCountyParks.com or by calling 843-795-4386.
“Palmetto TRIbe couldn’t be more excited to be back for year two with Charleston County Parks to support the only open water youth triathlon race in the area,” said Palmetto TRIbe Founder & Head Coach Shana M. Fitch. “Open water swimming creates a unique opportunity for athletes to experience a course consistent with youth triathlons offered beyond the Charleston area. Since we started our program three years ago, we’ve seen the local market increasingly accept triathlons as a sport. Swimming, biking and running are life sports that we introduce early in the hopes that one (possibly all) will last a lifetime.”
Palmetto TRIbe coaches will conduct two Youth Tri Swim Clinics on Monday, July 15 and Monday, July 22 at James Island County Park for an additional fee. The clinics are from 6-7 p.m. and $15 per participant. This is an excellent opportunity for participants to become more familiar with the actual swim course before the event. The adult-focused Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series is a five-race series spanning May through August. The series is in its 29th year and is also held at James Island County Park, with a 600-yard freshwater swim, 12-mile bike ride and a 5K flat run. The remaining 2019 races are held on June 17, July 8, July 29 and Aug. 12.
