Black Owned Bookstore To Open In Goose Creek

VaLinda Miller

A new independent bookstore is coming to the Charleston area. The Turning Page Bookshop in Goose Creek is opening its doors on Saturday, June 1, 2019 with a Grand Opening Celebration.

Not only this will be one of the few independent owned bookstores in the Charleston area, it will be only the second African American owned bookstore in South Carolina, following Malcolm X Center for Self Determination in Greenville.

VaLinda Miller, who previously owned The Booksmith in Seneca, decided to move the business closer to her Goose Creek home. Miller said she was sad to leave Seneca behind, but is excited for the new adventure.

“Goose Creek is growing fast, and I want to be part of the mixtures of imagination by showing the world that we are more than readers and support our small businesses,” Miller said. “We are what a diverse community can do and do well.”

The bookstore will be selling new books, including Bibles, Christian fiction, African-American books and Young Adult books. They will be serving coffee and will provide a relaxing space for book lovers and others a place to read books.

The Grand Opening Celebration will give an opportunity for book lovers to get free gifts and win door prizes. Charleston author John Stamp will be doing a signing for his books “Brother’s Keeper,” “Spoilers,” and “Shattered Circle”. The celebration will be held from 10 am to 3 pm.

In the future there will be more events, including book signings from local and South Carolina authors, book club discussions and children’s events.

Turning Page Bookshop is located on 216 St. James Avenue, Unit F. Hours are from 10 am to 7 pm Monday through Thursday and 10 am to 8 pm Fridays and Saturdays. For more information, call 843-501-7223 or email at info@turningpagebookshop.com. You may also visit the website at www.turningpagebookshop.com.

I would hope you would use this opportunity to start a reading program, that would help teach our local children to read! I bring young children to our church to teach them the Bible and what I find is our children can not read! I am not talking about slow reading. Some have not even been thought to sound out a word! Books and reading will change our life! Help our kids.

    • VALINDA MILLER on June 3, 2019 at 6:28 pm

Mr. Jeffers, that is one of my goals. We already have three people who are going to start a monthly reading session at the store. Please join us when you have the time. You may have some ideals we can use. Announcements will be posted in social media. Thank you

    Good Morning,
I am reaching out to you to inquire about an opportunity to utilize your place of business for a book signing, if that is something you offer to the community. If so, what is the protocol? Thank you for your attention in the matter.

Good luck because my husband and I had a black owned bookstore on rivers ave, due to the lack of our people support or the fact that we don’t read we closed. Be blessed

      • VaLinda Miller on June 4, 2019 at 11:20 am

        Ms. Roddy,
I’m sorry to hear that, but I would be interested in talking with you.
I’ve in in Charleston since 2003 and it would help me to have someone who has done it before.
        Thanks
        VaLinda
