Renowned jazz pianist and bandleader Noel Freidline returns to the Columbia Museum of Art with a slew of special guests for a tribute to one of America’s greatest musical talents on Saturday, June 1, at 7:00 p.m. Baker & Baker presents Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Jazz Celebration of Stevie Wonder with Noel Freidline features vocalists Maria Howell and Adam McKnight, guitarist Eric Brice, and saxophonist Juan Rollan, as well as Freidline himself on piano.
Stevie Wonder is undoubtedly one of the most prolific, successful, and influential artists of the 20th century, with 20 number one hits and 22 Grammy Awards. His songs have been covered in just about every genre imaginable — a testament to his genius.
Best known for her role as the choir soloist in the 1985 Oscar-nominated film The Color Purple, actress and chanteuse Howell has been known to leave audiences mesmerized with her powerful, sultry, smooth vocal stylings. McKnight has lent his unyielding stage presence and incredible voice to such notable acts as Elton John, Diana Ross, and Wonder himself. Eric Brice, a heavy hitter based in the Los Angeles area, has worked with Chaka Khan, Peabo Bryson, and Stephanie Mills. A member of the Noel Freidline Quintet and a CMA fan favorite, saxophonist Rollan has shared the stage with Al Green and Billy Cobham.
Freidline rounds it out with his exhilarating pianism and smart vocals. Based out of Charlotte, N.C., Freidline and his band have opened for many jazz legends, from Dave Brubeck to Rosemary Clooney. His repertoire brings out the best of every subgenre of the jazz world, including swing, show tunes, and everything from soulful and edgy reinterpretations of Patti Page to Africanized arrangements of Simon & Garfunkel.
The Baker & Baker series is devoted to highlighting diverse musical performances, ranging from Baroque music with harpsichords to avant-garde music played with nontraditional materials, and showcases musical excellence in its many forms.
