Mu Alpha Chapter Represents at the 74th Annual Meeting of the Sixth District

Durham, NC – The Mighty Sixth District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. held its 74th Annual Meeting at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham, NC from May 2nd to May 5th, 2019.  

The meeting was attended by a record number of registered members of the district and their spouses. The Charleston delegation included members of the Mu Alpha Chapter, which were led by First Vice District Representative and Chapter Basileus Kurt Walker.

Walker was re-elected to the position where he will serve for another year. Vice Basileus Reginald Terry was the recipient of the district’s Father of the Year award.  Terry works at Julian Mitchell School of Math and Science as a Behavior Management Specialist and is father to  J’Khari Miller, of the College of Charleston, was the winner of Undergraduate Grant Scholarship and Blakely Epps of the Citadel Military College was winner of the Founders’ Memorial Scholarship.

Miller will be a junior in the fall and majors in Public Health. Epps will be a senior this fall and double majors in Psychology and Spanish. Both each received $1,000 from the district for their awards.

Among the other activities included the golf tournament, Talent Hunt competition, Purple and Gold Affair and the Brotherhood and Life Members Luncheon. Omega Psi Phi Grand Basileus Dr. David Marion, First Vice Grand Basileus Ricky Lewis and Grand Chaplain Walter T. Richardson were present during the various activities.

The district held the finals of the African American History Bowl that featured students from Goose Creek High School. Goose Creek competed against the Top Teens team from Raleigh, North Carolina, which was sponsored by the Iota Iota Chapter. Goose Creek defeated the Top Teens team earning the championship trophy. 

The victory was dedicated to Sharonda Singleton, how was an advisor to team members prior to losing here life in the tragedy at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in 2015.

The 75th Annual District Meeting will be held in April 2020 in Columbia, South Carolina and it is where Walker hopes to take the reigns as the 42nd District Representative, which consists of all of 100 or more graduate and undergraduate chapters throughout North and South Carolina.
