Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day at Itinerant Literate Books

Itinerant Literate Books will celebrate Independent Bookstore Day on April 27 for the first time at their Park Circle storefront, Itinerant Literate Bookstop.

This year marks the retailer’s fourth year of participation in the nationwide event and first year as a brick-and-mortar store. Beginning as a market pop-up bookshop in 2015, Itinerant Literate launched its retrofitted 1958 Yellowstone Trailer on Independent Bookstore Day in 2016, and opened its Park Circle storefront in July 2018. The Bookstop will be open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. and is located at 4824 Chateau Ave.

Independent Bookstore Day celebrates the readers who support independent bookstores, and Itinerant Literate put together a day of games, giveaways, and daylong bookish fun.

“The day will be a marathon of events, all highlighting the unique offerings of our bookstore and local writer community,” says Julia Turner, co-owner of Itinerant Literate. “And we are especially excited that this year we will celebrate IBD at our bricks-and-mortar location, where we plan to take full advantage of our backyard space!”

Itinerant Literate will host its Fourth Annual StorySlam, a live storytelling event. The theme for this year is “Overheard”; storytellers deliver a three-minute short story that relates to the theme. Performers can sign up here. The slam starts at 6 p.m.

Other highlights include Lowcountry Folklore and Folktales with storyteller and percussionist, Julian Gooding; a Flash Fiction Workshop where participants will learn how to complete stories in fewer than 1,000 words with local author and professor Amy Hudock (RSVP required); Love Local Scavenger Hunt, an adult scavenger hunt with clues hidden at various Park Circle businesses (RSVP required); and Mini Lectures on literature and pop culture by two local scholars and experts. Dr. Licia Hendricks will deliver a talk entitled, “Poetic Justice: The Nexus of Art and Activism” and Dr. Thomas Horan will present on Dystopian Fiction.

Throughout the day, guests can enjoy free games and crafts, a backyard Kid’s Backyard Scavenger Hunt, and claim exclusive door prizes and special surprise giveaways. Itinerant Literate will also offer exclusive day-of merchandise created especially for Independent Bookstore Day by major publishers and authors.

“Park Circle is so supportive of small and independent business and has been so welcoming,” said Christen Thompson, Itinerant Literate co-owner. “We can’t wait to celebrate with the neighborhood and bring even more literary magic to our corner of the world.”
