Edisto District of The South Carolina Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church Celebrates its 2019 Founder’s Day
Reverend Dr. Norvel Goff, Sr., Presiding Elder of The Edisto District of the South Carolina Conference under the leadership of The Right Reverend Samuel L. Green, Sr., Presiding Prelate of the Seventh Episcopal District AME Church in South Carolina, invites the community to attend its 2019 Founder’s Day with events beginning Saturday, February 9th and ending Sunday, February 10th with a culminating worship service. Events planned for the 2019 African Methodist Episcopal Church Founder’s Day include the following: Saturday, February 9, 2019: The 33 churches of the Edisto District, along with other invited guests will participate in its second “Founder’s Day” Walk, an event to convey the presence of the AME church in the region; the unity of the more than 6,000 members, and our continued commitment to address issues of social injustice. The walk will begin at 10:00AM, beginning at the planned site for the International African American Museum (Wharfside Street) to Mother Emanuel AME Church (Mother Emanuel Way Memorial District at 110 Calhoun Street) in downtown Charleston.
Saturday, February 9, 2019: The 2019 Founder’s Day Symposium “A Call to Action: The African Methodist Episcopal Church Eradicating Barriers to Transform Communities” 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM at Mother Emanuel AME Church (110 Calhoun Street). Participants will include: U.S. Congressman Jim Clyburn, State Senator Marlon Kimpson, Reverend Nelson B. Rivers, III, pastor of Charity Missionary Baptist Church and a Vice President of the National Action Network, Marjory Wentworth (SC Poet Laureate), Reverend Dr. Lawrence Gordon, pastor of Greater Macedonia AME Church, Reverend Yvonne Gregg, pastor of St. Phillip AME Church and moderator Ms. Carolyn Murray, News Anchor – WCBD-TV.
A youth round table will engage children and youth on topics that include academic and life success, along with strategies for developing and maintaining a Christ-centered life in the current culture/climate. Presenters will include Reverend Jarrett Washington, pastor of Hopewell AME Church (Hemingway, SC), Reverend Dr. Herbert Jenkins, pastor of St. Luke AME Church (Hollywood, SC), and Gerelle Harvey, a student at Claflin University.
Sunday, February 10, 2019: The 2019 Founder’s Day Worship Service will be held at 4:00PM at Mother Emanuel AME Church, where the speaker will be Reverend Dr. Norvel Goff, Sr., Presiding Elder of The Edisto District. The Edisto District Founder’ s Day Mass Choir led by Reverend Darryl Lee will provide the music. African Methodist Episcopal churches worldwide convene each year to remember Bishop Richard Allen, our founder and first bishop of the AME Church. These annual events commemorate Bishop Allen’s birthday, February 14, 1760, as well as the founding of the AME denomination on April 9, 1816.
