Mitchelville Preservation Project will present the Women of Mitchelville during their annual Freedom Day program, in partnership with the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration. The program continues in the series that tells the untold stories of the people of Mitchelville and their experiences during the Reconstruction Era. Special features of the program include a follow up to the BBC series “The Hidden Dawn of Freedom” by Peter Jackson with a in-depth conversation between a descendant of Mitchelville and a descendant of General Ormsby Mitchel and a performance by the renowned Marlena Smalls. Mitchelville’s Freedom Day program will be Saturday, February 2, 2019 from 11am – 1pm in Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, 229 Beach City Road, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928. This event is free, and donations are welcome.
Mitchelville’s untold stories embody the perseverance of people who struggled to gain independence and went on to become a thriving community on Hilton Head Island. The annual Freedom Day program explores the significant impacts on Mitchelville through the lens of people who helped establish the community, those that lived in the community and those that are descendants of the community.
Freedom Day in Mitchelville is a family friendly event in the park. Please bring your chairs, but no coolers please.
