Greater Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church Appoints New Pastor

Reverend Rhonda Heyward

Reverend Rhonda Heyward is the newly appointed Pastor of Greater Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, located on Edisto Island, South Carolina. The appointment came from the Right Reverend Samuel Lawrence Green, Sr., Presiding Prelate of the 7th Episcopal District.

Greater Bethel AME Edisto is one of 32 churches under the leadership of Presiding Elder Reverend Dr. Norvel Goff, Sr. Reverend Heyward and her husband are members of Bethel AME in Ravenel, SC., where they have worshipped since 2015.

A native of Hollywood, South Carolina, Reverend Heyward is very active in the Ecumenical community. She is an alumnus of Baptist Hill High School and received her B.S. degree in Sociology from Voorhees College. Her Masters of Business Administration degree is from Indiana Wesleyan University and she is currently pursuing her Masters of Art in Theological study, from Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, South Carolina.

Reverend Heyward was also the second recipient of the Emanuel 9 AME Scholarship in 2017. She has made history in her immediate and extended family by becoming the first female Pastor, stating, “I thank God for this humbling experience to serve His people, utilizing the gifts that he has anointed me with.” We at Greater Bethel Edisto are walking in a ‘Spirit of Expectancy’.”

      I heard you preach but I know you was Called when you preached the words that brought me to the altar with flowing tears in my eye and joy in my heart to finally join the church and get baptised. I’ll thank God for you forever.
