Former SCSU Basketball Coach Cy Alexander to Hold Book Signing
Former South Carolina State men’s head basketball coach Cy Alexander is holding a book signing Friday, November 30 from noon to 6 p.m. at the campus bookstore in the Crawford-Zimmerman Complex.
Alexander’s book, “Beyond the Backboard,” was recently released. It chronicles his journey as a Historical Black College and University (HBCU) basketball coach, detailing what it’s like to coach at the lower level of Division I basketball where budgets are always an issue and respect isn’t always there.
Orangeburg area persons who prepaid for Alexander’s book can pick up an autographed copy during Friday’s book signing. Other interested persons can purchase the book in paperback for $21.95 (normally 24.95) and in hardback for 32.95 (normally $35.95).
Alexander, a Winston-Salem, NC native, began his head coaching career at SC State in 1987. In 16 seasons (1987-2003) as Bulldog head coach, his teams finished first or second in 13 campaigns, won five MEAC tournament titles and made as many appearances in the prestigious NCAA postseason tournament.
Alexander, whose coaching career spanned 39 years, also served head coaching stints at Tennessee State and, most recently, North Carolina A&T. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Howard.
