Florida A&M’s once a storied football program has more recently fallen on hard times. One of head coach Willie Simmons’ goals is to restore the Rattlers to prominence.
The Rattlers took a big step towards that Saturday by defeating North Carolina A&T 22-21 in Greensboro and for the first time ever sits on top of both the BOXTOROW Coaches and Media Polls. It’s the first time in the 10-year history of the coaches poll and 12-year history of the media poll that the Rattlers have been on top.
In the coaches poll, the Rattlers received all but two first place votes. The Aggies dropped to No. 2 this week and received the other two first place votes. Prairie View A&M’s 38-0 loss to Southern saw the Panthers drop to No. 7 after achieving its highest ranking of the season at No. 2 last week. Southern went from receiving votes last week to No. 8 in the poll.
In a split vote in the media poll, the Rattlers received the majority of the first place votes. The Aggies dropped to No. 2 this week receiving a first place vote. Grambling received one less first place vote than FAMU and is No. 4. The Panthers drop to No. 9 after achieving a No. 4 ranking last week. Southern went from receiving votes last week to No. 10 in the poll.
Morehouse lost its first game of the season to Albany State on Sunday and dropped four spots to No. 6.
