Local Boy Scouts Visit Washington, D.C.

Boy Scout Troop 469 sent a delegation of thirty scouts, leaders and friends to Washington, D.C. earlier this summer. Scouts arrived early on the morning of June 13 and immediately went on a visit to Capitol Hill. The troop had scheduled meetings with each of our state representatives. They toured the Exhibition Hall at the US Capital and viewed original documents and artifacts, videos, touchable models and computer interactives. While there, they learned more about the history of the Capital and Congress and were given an exclusive behind the scenes tour by Representative Mark Sanford, including the legislative chambers and the balcony with a spectacular view of the National Mall.
The troop took a walking tour of many other areas of interest, including the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam and World War II memorials and the Washington Monument. They stood in awe at the base of the Martin Luther King, Jr. monument. Scouts also visited The Pentagon. Scouts were taken on a personal guided tour of the facility and learned about the mission of the DOD and numerous military displays as well as the onsite 9/11 memorial.

The highlight of the trip was the visit to the National Museum of African American History. It was a phenomenal experience! From the meticulous architectural design of the building to the meticulous details of the history. Although it was impossible to view every one of the galleries and displays, the experience was one that will not be forgotten.
Troop 469 is a part of the Coastal Carolina Council and its charter organization is Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston, SC. They are proud to have been a part of the Boy Scouts of America since 1986. Troop leader is Irvin Downey, Scout Master.

This is an excellent article and demonstrated that many of our youths are doing very positive things in our community.It demonstrated that the Boy Scouts is a positive and progressive organization that can help our boys grow up to be successful young men.
