Entertainment mogul Steve Harvey held another successful mentoring camp program at the Rock Ranch in Rock, Georgia during Father’s Day weekend. Several Charleston area men were among the group of volunteer counselors. Johnny Orr, Frederick Pasley, and Christopher Thurman of Mu Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. volunteered their time to participate in the Steve Harvey Mentoring Program as mentors along with 30 other Omega Men from around the United States.

The Steve Harvey Mentoring Program (SHMP) is designed to share and teach the principle of manhood. The mentoring program helps young men realize their potential and prepare them for a strong productive future. The program goals are educational enrichment, one-on-one mentoring, and cultural awareness. The program’s aim is to break the misguided traits of manhood and introduce positive role models who provide constructive examples of manhood. This year more than 200 fatherless teenage boys from around the country attended the 2018 Steve Harvey Mentoring Program. The mothers/guardians along with their young men experienced a dynamic, life-changing 4-day weekend filled with motivation and encouragement.

Created in 2009, the mentoring program is an interactive camp-like environment whose sole purpose is to share and teach the principles of manhood and dream-building to young men. The program helps young men realize their potential and envision a future where they are physically and emotionally equipped, responsible and productive men. This program includes a host of workshops that focus on manhood, leadership, personal responsibility, dream-building, community empowerment and the importance of nutrition and physical fitness. In addition, the young men were introduced to positive male role models who are leaders in various areas of their own communities, that included business, entertainment and various other professions.

The qualification for young men to attend the camp is that they must be between the ages of 13-18, being raised by a single mother or female guardian, enrolled in grades 8th-11th and a legal resident of the United States. Additionally, the mother/guardian is required to attend the single mother’s empowerment summit in Atlanta during the mentoring camp period.

Overall, the 2018 Boy’s Mentoring Camp has impacted several families from the Atlanta metro area as well as around the country. In addition to the various educational and career professional speakers, the men of Omega Psi Phi, Fraternity Inc., were able to spend time with the young men individually as well as in group settings to provide mentorship and guidance.

The men of Omega Psi Phi were available to their mentees 24 hours a day, from participating in activities to sharing sleeping quarters in the tent provided; to ensure the mentees’ safety, immediate needs and daily preparation and movement to various activities and seminars. “I enjoyed watching the young men develop camaraderie with one another,” says Bro. Thurman. The thirty plus Omega Men from across the United States that served as mentors for “The Steve Harvey Mentoring Program for Young Men” all unselfishly volunteered their time for a much needed cause during this Father’s Day weekend. These men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc feel that the lasting impact they hope to have provided to these young men was well worth the sacrifice as they aspire to fulfill their creed to lift as they climb. “We plan to keep in touch and continue too mentor and provide guidance to the young men that were assigned in our various groups,” says brother Pasley. “I am really looking forward to participating in the program next year.”
